Portsmouth, Obesity or overweight is always associated with a variety of degenerative diseases that kill. But the new study found that obese people because they have a keen sense of smell. Increasing obesity epidemic makes doctors and scientists fear there will be many people who accumulate fat in the body.
For this reason, researchers from the University of Portsmouth doing research to find out the causes that drive the epidemic of obesity. And the researchers discovered the reason why there are many people who are obese, which deals with the sense of smell.
“From our research found that people with high-mass index or BMI has a keen sense of smell in food. This is what makes them unable to refuse to eat more,” said Dr Lorenzo Stafford, the leader of this research, as reported by BBC News, Tuesday ( 11/16/2010).
According to Dr. Stafford, this happens because the brain that processes information about smell is also associated with feeding centers in the brain. In this study, the team of Dr. Stafford asked 64 participants to conduct a series of experiments that test the ability of each person and the sense of smell compared to his weight.
The study found that the sense of someone smelling better than when you are hungry after eating or before eating. Studies also show that people with larger body weight have a better sense of smell.
“We do not know why this could happen, but this could be the way the body to detect and reject foods that are no longer required to maintain this energy balance as well. It can stop people to eat too much,” explained Dr Stafford further.
Dr. Stafford believes that having a sense of smell want to force people to eat more, especially because of the smell of food is so tempting.
“I hope this study will encourage more people to be able to control appetite and weight, so that the obesity epidemic can be overcome,” said Dr. Stafford.
