Ear Piercing More Vulnerable Than Circumcision Complications
Los Angeles, for those who oppose, circumcision in boys is considered as a risky mutilation. But in a study, the risk of complications during circumcision actually smaller than when girls pierced ears.
Some opponents of circumcision activists in San Francisco often claim that male circumcision on risk triggering a tremendous pain, nerve disorders and damage to the body’s natural tissues are functional. In some cases, circumcision can even lead to death.
But a study at the University of Washington reveals other facts, that the risk of complications in the circumcision only ranged from 0.2 to 0.6 percent. The most common complications are bleeding, followed by a mild infection that triggers swelling.
Circumcision is actually beneficial because it can reduce the risk of transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs).American Academy of Paediatrics as well admit it, but not require it because STIs can also be prevented by using condoms.
From the aspect of psychological trauma during circumcision has not been proven to be a significant effect for the mental growth of children. The presumption is, the trauma of the pain during circumcision can interfere with the growth of male psyche.
When viewed from the high-low risk of complications, ear piercing in girls is even more risky. Amitai Etzioni, PhD, a sociologist from the University of California revealed that 20 percent of girls have minor complications and 3 percent severe complications when pierced.
Complication that often occurs when pierced earlobes among others swell and the surrounding skin dry. While severe complications such as quoted by CNN , for example infection, cyst formation, wound widening and sometimes traumatic.
Based on a comparison of high and low risk of complications, Etzioni argues, if circumcision is banned then pierced ears should also be banned. Prohibition for both would be difficult, because in certain cultures circumcision and ear piercing is part of the tradition.
