Doctors Try to Overcome Egg Allergy with eggs
Children are prone to various types of known food allergies. After the peanuts, allergies that often occurs in children are allergic to eggs even though they are often consumed by children.
To overcome the allergy, a number of doctors in the United States tried to reverse the allergic condition in some children and adolescents by giving small amounts of eggs every day for 1-2 years so that their immune systems ‘learn’ to accept any food that is most commonly found and hidden in a variety of food ranging from pasta, burgers, mayonnaise until marshmallows are.
However, this method still can try yourself at home. This method requires special supervision for several years because the reaction can still bring its own risks, says a team of doctors involved in this study.
“This experimental therapy can only be done safely by a trained doctor,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which sponsored the study.
This method also can not cope with an allergic condition in every person, even some out of the study participants were unable to bear with an allergic reaction.
“But the results really show the potential for the treatment of egg allergy in the future so it needs to be tested in children within a broader scope,” explained lead researcher, Dr. A. Wesley Burks, chief of the department of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
More than 2 percent of children worldwide are allergic to eggs, characterized by wheezing or asthma, sore throat, or even reactions that endanger lives while consuming different types and variants of the egg, Burks said. Many children who experience this condition at the age of 4-5 years up to adolescence.
My biggest concern is if the kids are eating foods made from eggs, but they do not realize it then led to a great reaction. Therefore, this study seeks to train the immune system so that children can tolerate eggs, even in small quantities, to prevent allergies.
The study involved 55 children aged 5-18 years. 40 children were given egg white powder, which is usually the cause allergies in small doses and take place every day. 15 children were given an egg from starch as a comparison. The amount is added every two weeks until the kids in the first group able to eat about a third of eggs every day.
Periodically, participants went to the doctors to try to eat the eggs. Participants failing to undergo tests if the doctor can see symptoms such as wheezing or asthma.
After a year, no participants from both groups who survived the challenge. “At the end of the first year, half of the children in the first group managed to escape. But at the end of the second year, 75 percent of participants passing,” said Burks as reported from huffingtonpost.
Then, Burks takes a step further by asking participants eating eggs directly even in small portions as well. This is to see whether participants could tolerate without using powdered egg whites.
The result, participants who pass the second test proved able to stop taking the egg white powder after thoroughly to avoid eating eggs for 4-6 weeks, participants were asked to try to eat eggs again as they please. 11 of 30 children were shown to be able to do it without a problem.
