The electronic cigarette is a tobacco product that is used by using the battery. Steam nicotine cigarettes will be produced and enter the wearer’s body when inhaled. In Indonesia, this product never circulated illegally. But in the United States, manufacturers of electronic cigarettes recently required to indicate whether the products are not harmful to public health.
Manufacturers of electronic cigarettes claim that its product is able to provide enjoyment of nicotine without the health risks such as lung cancer and heart disease associated with the use of conventional tobacco products.
“These products claim to have fewer health risks for the wearer than traditional tobacco products. We believe that the claim is to be approved by the FDA. Thus, the sponsor must bring a set of data to the office to support the claim,” said Dr. Jane Henney, professor of medicine and public health sciences at the University of Cincinnati and chairman of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee that wrote the report.
These products are sold as part of a strategy to reduce deaths and disease among tobacco smokers are difficult to stop smoking. But not much is known about the health risks of these products.
The IOM report suggests that in order to give approval, the FDA (the body that regulate the circulation of drugs and food in the U.S.) requires testing in the laboratory and in animals, clinical trials with people, and post-marketing study to see if there are health problems that occur after the product widespread use.
“The American Lung Association praised the IOM because it recognizes that tobacco products should be marketed and considered safe, meaning that the product should be completely safe,” said Charles Connor, President and CEO American Lung Association.
Several decades ago, the tobacco industry to develop tobacco products are lighter and less dangerous than those already on the market before. Millions of Americans are turning to products which are called ‘mild’ and ‘low tar’ is.
“Instead of quitting smoking, they died because they believe the claims. Standards recommended by an expert scientific panel is designed to prevent the recurrence of similar efforts in deceiving the American public,” added Connor.
According to the report, the research should see whether the product is addictive and whether the components of this product is harmful to health. In addition, the product must be tested in smokers, former smokers, new smokers, adolescents, and groups at high risk of tobacco use.
“Testing should also evaluate whether these products will attract people who now do not smoke, or in people who may have quit smoking and will return to old habits thereby increasing the risk. This product should only be intended for individuals who are really not able to stop smoking, ”Henney said as reported by HealthDay.
But the Electronic Cigarette Association saw not the safety and public health as a motivating factor behind this IOM recommendation, but a conspiracy by the tobacco companies, drug companies and the federal government to keep its products continue to circulate in the market.
“I’ve been fighting this problem for quite some time, but we are dealing with a much larger group. Electronic Cigarettes deliver nicotine without the risk of fire. Just like cigarettes, without the 7000 harmful chemicals and 65 carcinogens,” said Ray Story, CEO of Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association.
